Welcome

The Institute for Local Government Studies was created in 1968 as the Municipal Legal Studies Center. Since that time, the practice of local government law has grown remarkably in importance and complexity.

The Institute's goal was, and is, to provide programs that help to improve the professional skills of men and women who face the tough legal questions challenging our nation's communities.

Whether you are a newly appointed city attorney, a newly elected planning or zoning commissioner, or an experienced pro who has represented cities or developers for decades, the Institute offers an annual program that will challenge and inform you.  Our offerings include Planning and Zoning 101, a basic and entertaining program that introduces newcomers t the legal liabilities and pitfalls that confront those involved in land use issues; a one-day program for Planning and Zoning for Public Officials and lawyers that provides an update on important legal and planning developments; and an annual three day program on Planning, Zoning and Eminent Domain that brings together many of the nation’s best and brightest municipal law practitioners to discuss and debate emerging issues of the day.
